Congratulations to Benjamin Uchiyama, PhD in History, who will be joining the University of Kansas as an Assistant Professor of Modern Japanese History beginning in fall 2013.

Ben’s work analyzes five cultural constructs to study how Japanese mass culture was transformed in the late 1930s and early 1940s as the state mobilized the country for total war. Before coming to USC, he completed his undergraduate studies in History and Political Science at UC Davis and continued on to do a Master’s at Harvard University in Regional Studies with a focus on East Asia. He received the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship through EASC twice during his first two years in the program to fund his area and Japanese language studies.
